Medical information service opened for healthcare professionals
Ergopharm has opened a medical information service, allowing prescribers, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to put questions about its products directly to the company.
Product information is written to cover the general case, and clinical questions rarely arrive in the general case. A pharmacist asking whether a formulation's excipients matter for a particular patient, or a prescriber asking what is known about an interaction, needs an answer grounded in the product's own documentation rather than a referral back to the leaflet they have already read.
“Half the adverse reactions we learn about arrive inside a question about something else.”
Enquiries are logged, answered with reference to the released product information and the evidence available, and retained. Where an enquiry discloses a suspected adverse reaction — which happens more often than the enquirer intends — it is routed into pharmacovigilance under the same procedure as a direct report, and the enquirer is told this.
The service answers questions about the product. It does not give advice about the treatment of an individual patient, which remains the responsibility of the professional who has examined them.
