Yohimbine Hydrochloride 10 mg

Yohimbine is a tablet made from a substance found in the bark of a tree. It blocks a particular nerve signal in the body, which widens some blood vessels, increases blood flow and raises the activity of the nervous system. Because of this it also raises blood pressure and heart rate. Your doctor has prescribed it for you after weighing up whether it is suitable. It is prescription-only and must not be taken by anyone else.

This medicine acts strongly on blood pressure and on mood, so your doctor needs a full picture of your health and your other medicines first.

Warnings and precautions

• +Talk to your doctor before using yohimbine if you have ever had raised blood pressure or have been told to watch it. Your blood pressure and pulse should be checked before you start and while you are taking it.
• +Talk to your doctor before using yohimbine if you have ever felt anxious, panicky or very low, because this medicine can bring those feelings on or make them stronger.
• +Talk to your doctor before using yohimbine if you have an enlarged prostate or difficulty passing urine.
• +Talk to your doctor before using yohimbine if you have diabetes, as this medicine may change your blood sugar.
• +Talk to your doctor if you feel your heart racing, get a bad headache, feel very anxious, or feel dizzy when you stand up. Do not simply continue and hope it passes.
• +Avoid drinks and tablets containing caffeine while you take this medicine, and avoid alcohol, as both can make the shaking, fast heartbeat and anxiety worse.
• +This medicine is not a treatment for weight loss or for sports performance, and must never be used for that. Doing so can cause dangerous rises in blood pressure.

Other medicines and Yohimbine Hydrochloride

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines, including ones bought without a prescription, herbal products and supplements. It is especially important to mention any medicine for blood pressure, including clonidine, as yohimbine works against them and can make your blood pressure rise; antidepressants of every kind, particularly monoamine oxidase inhibitors, which must not be combined with yohimbine; medicines for anxiety or for mental health; stimulants, including decongestants for a blocked nose and diet products; medicines for an irregular heartbeat; and diabetes medicines. Herbal stimulants and high-caffeine products should also be mentioned, because they add to the effect on your heart and blood pressure.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility

Do not take yohimbine if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant. It has not been shown to be safe in pregnancy and can affect blood pressure and the nervous system. Do not take it while breastfeeding, as it is not known whether it passes into breast milk. If you could become pregnant, talk to your doctor about reliable contraception, and tell your doctor at once if you become pregnant while taking this medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine.

Driving and using machines

Yohimbine can make you feel dizzy, shaky, anxious or light-headed, and can make it hard to sleep, so you may be tired the next day. Do not drive, cycle or use tools or machines if you are affected. Take extra care when you stand up from sitting or lying, as you may feel faint.

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. It is a tablet that you swallow whole with a drink of water. Because it can keep you awake, your doctor will usually tell you to avoid taking it late in the day. Your doctor decides the amount and how long you take it, and will normally start low and review how you respond, so never take more than you have been told to and never take it more often. Do not take it with caffeine or alcohol. If you forget a tablet, skip it and carry on with the next one at the usual time; do not take a double amount to make up for a forgotten one. If you take more tablets than you were told to, contact your doctor or go to the nearest hospital straight away, and take the pack with you, because too much can cause a dangerous rise in blood pressure.

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

• +A fast or pounding heartbeat

• +Difficulty sleeping
• +Headache
• +Shaking or trembling
• +Sweating and flushing
• +Feeling dizzy, especially when standing up
• +Feeling sick, being sick, or stomach discomfort
• +Needing to pass urine more often, or difficulty passing urine
• +Tingling or a prickling feeling in the skin

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Store below 30 degrees Celsius in the original pack, protected from light and moisture. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date printed on the carton and the blister foil; the expiry date refers to the last day of that month. Do not use the tablets if the blister is torn or the tablets look damaged or discoloured. Do not throw medicines away in your household waste or down the toilet. Take any medicine you no longer need back to your pharmacy for safe disposal. This helps protect the environment.

Each tablet contains yohimbine hydrochloride as the active substance. The other ingredients are the fillers, binder and lubricant that form the tablet; the full list is printed on the carton.
